What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the pulp and nerves of the tooth. It focuses on the diagnosis prevention and treatment of diseases related to the pulp.

“Endo” means “inside” in Greek and “odont” is Greek for “tooth.”

According to Luis I Grossman, DDS, DMD, “Three discoveries during the latter part of the last century that changed the course of root canal treatment were anesthesia, asepsis, and the discovery of x rays.” The control of pain up to that time was raw.

An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in saving teeth. Endodontists are specially trained for two or more years following dental school. Some of their complex endodontic procedures include root canal treatment and endodontic surgery. Advanced technologies and specialized techniques provide endodontists an accurate view of the inside of the tooth and allow them to treat the tooth quickly.

Endodontists help you keep your natural smile by saving your tooth, and indirectly improving your overall health. Nothing else will look, function and/or feel like your natural tooth.
